The Location

bridgeSouth west corner of Spain near to the Portuguese Algarve set on the estuary of the Guadiana River and magnificent Atlantic beaches. It is an easy journey by car from Faro (forty minutes) or Seville airports (about an hour and a quarter). There is a bus service from the airports to the nearby town but car hire is preferable. We can arrange taxi pick ups to and from the airport for you should you wish.

The Nearest Town

The traditional Spanish town of Ayamonte is just five minutes drive away. It has a population of 18,000 inhabitants. Its old mediaeval quarter is in the central district with narrow streets and historical buildings. There is a great deal to do and see. The town has beautiful squares, plenty of shopping and lots of night life with restaurants catering for every taste and budget. Ayamonte is not a seasonal resort with a "ghost town" feel once out of the main summer season. Its history dates back to 709. It has a lot in common with North Africa especially Morocco.

An International Music Festival takes place each year in an air-conditioned opera house. The area attracts international nautical sporting events. Important religious days are celebrated by local "festa". There are big parades at Carnival at the end of February when "Ayamontinos"dress in costumes and parade through the streets on carts and floats. During "Holy week" which in effect runs through March/April there takes place what is considered to be an outstanding national fiesta. May sees a celebration of "Romeria" with its celebration of local dress and singing. By September there is "Las Anguistias" fiesta. The local feast day is celebrated on 8th September.

Ferry Services

A ferry link between Ayamonte on the Spanish side and Vila Real De Santo Antonio upon the Portuguese side of the Guadiana River is an interesting crossing point and makes a good day out. Alternatively, go up river. The river is navigable with organised boat trips some lasting all day that include lunch or dinner and sightseeing stops.

Bus and Rail

With destinations such as historic Huelva 55km or Seville 150km an alternative to driving is taking a regular service in air-conditioned buses and coaches from the large and busy bus station. An inter-city rail service terminates at Vila Real De Santo Antonio on the Portuguese side of the ferry crossing.
